Helping home life run a little smoother

Care and Maintenance

Taking care of your bathroom will help ensure it stays looking new and you enjoy using it.

If you keep your bathroom clean on a daily basis, a once a week clean will be a lot easier and less stressful. Below are our best tips for an easy care bathroom. If you have any tips you’d like to share, send them to us and we may include them in this section.

Shower heads
To remove lime and other mineral deposits from your shower head, remove the head and place it in a bowl or bucket containing a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Alternatively soak a cloth in the mixture and tie it to the shower head with an elastic band for 2 hours.

Shower walls
Keep your shower walls clean and mildew-free by cleaning regularly with a tile cleaner or fungicide such as ammonia. Dry with a towel after each use and leave curtain or door open between showers.

Baths and sinks
A good way to keep your bath and sinks clean is to wipe them down after you use them. You can use a damp cleaning cloth product, baby wipes or even a piece of toilet paper or an old (clean) sock placed over your hand. Put a hook or nail under your sink to hold your cloth or sock so that they can dry between uses. Be sure to wash them once a week.

Tiles
With a little care your tiles can stay looking good for many years. There are two types of tile, glazed and unglazed. Glazed tiles have a glass like surface and can be glossy, matte or textured. Keep them clean easily with a non abrasive household cleaner and wipe with a damp cloth. Unglazed tiles are usually made from natural clays and need a little more care. Clean them with a damp cloth and a soapfree detergent diluted in water. An effective and inexpensive cleaner that works for all kinds of tiles is a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar.

Tile grout
The grouting joint between the bath and tile wall can often crack and peel away. Simply remove the old grout with a sharp pointed tool, then dry the joint thoroughly and fill with a silicon rubber (available in most hardware stores). Keep the grout clean on a weekly basis and repeat the process once a year.
